Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why is AgriMaps being replaced?
AgriMaps, originally launched in 2016, is running on technology that is now outdated. To ensure the system is supported and facilitate easier updates and maintenance, the application is being moved to a new platform.
Q. How do I access the new application?
Once officially launched, the URL to the new application will be available at the top of this page.
Q. When will the new application be live?
While a specific launch date hasn’t yet been determined, the new AgriMaps app is expected to be available by early 2025.
Q. Will there be any downtime during the transition?
No downtime is anticipated. Both versions are expected to be available for a brief transition period to assist with the changeover.
Q. Can I access the old application after the new one is live?
Yes, for a brief transition period. The old application is expected to be available until it is retired in March 2025.
Q. Will bookmarks or saved links to the old AgriMaps still work?
Bookmarks and saved links to agrimaps.gov.mb.ca will continue to open the old application until it is retired in March 2025. After it is officially retired, links and bookmarks to agrimaps.gov.mb.ca will no longer work. Once live, the new application URL will be made available and bookmarks and saved links will need to be updated.
Q. Is there a tutorial or guide on how to use the new application?
Yes, a comprehensive guide can be accessed from the Information tool located in the top right corner of AgriMaps. This webpage will also be updated as new training resources become available.
Q. Will all the data from the old application be available in the new one?
Not all the data from the old application will be available in the new version. The new AgriMaps focuses on using public and authoritative geospatial datasets, ensuring greater traceability and accountability of the included data. As a result, some layers have been updated, replaced, or removed. While some familiar layers may no longer be available, the new application includes reliable and current information.
Q. Why is some of the soil survey data displayed slightly differently than in the old AgriMaps?
There are some slight variations on the display of soil survey data in this new version of AgriMaps. The new version of AgriMaps has only one group of data that contains both detailed and reconnaissance information. To help distinguish between the two scales of info, the detailed soil data has green labels and outlines, while the reconnaissance has orange labels and outlines.
Q. Is there any new data available in the new application?
Yes, the new application includes updated soil survey data, now expanded to cover additional municipalities such as Elton, Whitehead, Cornwallis, and Riverdale. This data is also available for download on Data MB: DataMB Soil Survey Data.
The updated layer list also features new imagery and image acquisition dates, along with various federal datasets, including Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s latest Annual Crop Inventory.
Q. Are there any new features or tools in the new application?
Yes, several new features have been added to enhance the overall functionality. The new application supports adding map layers that may be of interest. A coordinate conversion tool is now available for easier location referencing. Users can create bookmarks to quickly return to specific areas of interest or use the previous and next extent buttons to navigate back and forth through previously visited map extents. A filtering option and table view have also been introduced for soil survey data, enabling the identification of regions that meet custom search criteria. The ability to adjust the transparency of map layers has also been included, allowing for improved visualization and comparison of data.
Q. Will any features from the old application be excluded in the new one?
The ability to switch basemaps has been removed as the new application has been designed for optimal viewing with the World Imagery basemap.
Q. Is the new application mobile-friendly?
While the new application has been optimized for mobile devices using responsive design principles, opening the app in a mobile browser on iOS devices can cause the browser to randomly refresh. This is a known issue that is expected to receive some enhancements early next year. For the best performance and user experience in the meantime, we don't recommend using AgriMaps on an iphone.
Q. How can I report bugs or issues with the new application?
The underlying mapping technology will receive automatic updates from the software provider every few months. While these updates include bug fixes and enhancements, they can occasionally introduce new issues. If you encounter any bugs or issues with the application, please email agriculture@gov.mb.ca.
